Precious

                                                                                          José Alves da Silva Júnior

The movie Precious, based on the novel Push by Sapphire, tells the story of a sixteen-year-old black girl named Claireece Precious Jones, who lives in Harlem and whose life has undergone quite a few hectic yet defining turn of events. She happens to be pregnant with her second child, both fathered by her biological father, who would always show up for visiting as long as he could touch the girl. On top of it, she is constantly physically as well as psychologically abused by her mother, Mary, too, who, by the way, does not work and basically lives off welfare. Nevertheless, such an overt heartbreaking reality does not take away the one thing that makes Precious feel worthy and cared for, which are the incessant daydreaming moments of hers. She gets lost in the reverie, where there is a guy with a tooth missing smiling at her, and she looks stunningly glamorous being followed around by paparazzi.

Due to Precious’ harsh situation, she is set to move to an alternative school called Each One Teach One, where she gets to know a whole different world and the lovely teacher, Mrs. Rain, who embraces her and eventually helps her overcome the obstacles she could not handle otherwise. Through new experiences, which enabled her to give a successful twist in her life, she could look inside herself and find the strength she needed, in order to free herself from such a miserable background she once existed in.

The genre drama brings out the human side of ours, which leads us into thinking certain things over as well as transferring different realities into our own. The movie portrays such an unsavory situation of life, in order to create awareness and make you realize that you can pull through everything, as long as you set goals, pursue them and cling to people who will make you become the best person you can. Also, there is a wide field of study with regard to the spoken language.
